bette,
that is not what you said. you said:
"The new president must be Capone!!!"
I don't think she has been elected yet? I was just wondering if you had some inside information !!!
As for the candidates answering the question.. there is a TREMENDOUS difference in a candidate being prepared and candidates READING PREPARED RESPONSES !!!!

At least there were four different views among four of us that were at the meeting! I'm sorry however, that I introduced the subject of who would be Board President next year! It seems we're mixing that topic up with actions at the Candidate's meeting! They are separate issues, as is the issue of which candidates get elected! It is the Board - not us - that will nominate, determine and approve who the Board President will be. We will have no say in that. And it is highly unlikely any new member to the Board, with no BOE experiance, will be elected to the Presidency over incumbent members - no matter what our individual desires.
The only input we'll have is Tuesday when we Vote - using those three other levers in the Booth! It is, as the Commissioner is so fond of saying, a "MOOT POINT" if your Candidate of choice doesn't get on the Board.[/b] But back to the Meet your Candidate night - this thread was to be a review of that topic and how well it went and how it could be made better next year. Let's keep the focus on that.If warranted, the other two items "My Candidate of Choice" and "Who will make the best BOE President" might be best served by opening other threads. Ed.
Let's make sure we all try to get the most dollars to the Children! What we get to them now, 70ยข on the dollar is a shame!

:)Again, just my opinion on getting her elected on the Board. No inside info just hopeful so let's not whip this into a nit picking thing it is just an opinon based site or at least that it how it is advertised to be. The questions were standard and it seemed to me that any answer that seemed prepared was exactly that. Prepared answers for basically standard questions regarding getting on the board and what they have to offer. In any forum of business or politics you show up ready and not just shoot from the hip, you prepare to the best of your ability for answers and elaborate from there. I feel that those candidates that were more prepared or seemed to be took the debate more seriously than others. From my standpoint that is what was done. We all just have to get out and vote Yes for the budget and who in our heart we think is truly the best for the board and the serious changes and follow through that needs to take place.

bette,
you are missing the point... One can be prepared and should be prepared for general questions, but when questions seem to be re-written ( like patriot said) and candidates are reading answers to the EXACT questions... seems to be something wrong with that !!!!

Maybe I am missing the point. I did not see that. I felt they all had the chance to prepare for these kinds of questions. The EXACT questions? What other questions could there have been. Ethics, knowledge and performance questions. That is what I am talking about, it is easy to prepare for that, I can't imagine being sidelined by any of questions asked. We all know most of the candidates, they are our friends, neighbors and community members. This forum was not to see who the nice guy is, we all know everyone up there has the good of the community and our children at heart. The forum is to see what they are prepared to do and what they bring to the table. The questions will always be pretty much the same, I think some knew that because of their background and professionalism and some didn't that is what the evening is all about. Meet the candidates is and should be hard core. It should have been longer, all of the candidates should have answered all questions and I would even like to have seen a lottery taken for questions from the audience. Now on the school board thread we can talk about who is truly best for the job.

It may be a bit premature, but I think we can set up a poll here once the elections are complete to determine who WE believe would be the best candidate. Lets get the elections over with then onto the next step.
JUST, does the administration have any say in nominating a candidate for the presidents seat? Is that STRICTLY the BOE trustees that make that nomination?

goplainedge!
Question: "JUST, does the administration have any say in nominating a candidate for the presidents seat? Is that STRICTLY the BOE trustees that make that nomination?"
Answer: Within the guidelines set forth by the State Education Department - the Administrator, as an employee of the Board of Education of the District, has absolutely no input nor control of the Nomination and Approval of the Board President. The Board is his employer - which he serves at their discretion (Hire/Fire at will process in NY State).
Comment: Any Plainedge resident should know by now that the Board of Education in Plainedge has characteristically allowed for the past few years, the Administration to make the majority of decisions for it.
The administration has diligently worked at retaining its dominance over the Board and often taken over the running of its Official Meetings with the public.
The administration has demonstrated in the past that it makes decisions without Board approval, and it has taken actions in community events which are outside the range and scope of its authority.*
Therefore, as a practical matter, there is no reason for anyone not to believe that the administration will make every effort it can to influence the selection of the Board President, and that activity is, at this time, planned and in effect.
Ed.
* Meetings were held in the District where I personally requested the BOE to restrict the administrator from telling sectors of the public about his plans for the acquisition of property that he had no control and no authority over.
