Lets start the thought juices flowing....
Hypothetical scenario:
If you were running for a seat on the Plainedge Board of Education, what would be your platform, how would you spread the word and why would people vote for you.
All welcome to discuss

My platform would be plain and simple:
Make Force Dr. Richman to follow the directions of the Board - make the replacement Board follow the wishes of the community.

I would do some polling on the most important issues facing us via the web and letters asking for input on various important issues. None of us are as smart as we like to think we are. Some ideas can be improved upon no matter how good by others or a group. I would also ask to have all of the public meetings and coffee hours available via webcasting. To get more people involved. It could be done as a test program. By keeping track of how many users log on we'd know if this is really a good way to get more people involved in the process. There's more, but this has already become longer then I wanted to write. Either way, I have no time to run or do this as I work 2 jobs.

I would agree with rinx on this one. The BOE REALLY NEEDS TO start LISTENING to the public. I would have like to see them take a poll from the residents and see if WE wanted Dr Richman's contract renewed rather then have them ( aka his followers ) to make that decision. Yes, I do relize that we voted the BOE into there positions and in doing so have given them proxy, however I would have hoped that by now they would get the hint that the residents are not happy.

I agree with the online surveys. These are very easy to set up and allows the BOE to receive immediate feedback as to what the community is thinking about certain issues.
They can pose certain questions to us (the people that voted them in) and obtain first hand knowledge and feedback. This can even be set up so that people can only vote once. The BOE wouldn't even need to hear the community complain (as they so put it). They can log into a website and see the status of the polls.
Back on topic..... I think if I was running, I would want to be more in touch with the community members. Listen to what their needs are (yes, this can be exhausting). Work towards getting a sound and accurate budget submitted each year and maintaining a district that is cost effective.
But back to reality....no time to be a BOE member. I have to work to pay my taxes.

Irishman -- Are you saying that we should be concerned about sending emails to BOE members? I am confused? Please share any insight with the rest of us.

Hey C_P_R.... guy I already got me butt chewed off by my "friend" for saying anything a'tall. True, he had a few and leaked more than he should, but not enough for me to be saying anything more. ;D An old saying: To the wise man tho' It seems this'd be hot topic to the BOE Why don't you be asking them? It should stir a few souls at one of their fabulous Board meetings!

GOPYBL,
First I have to say Thankyou! Your posts, (although I may not agree with all) show that you are a VERY good addition to this forum and to this community.
I think that "Irishman" is trying to reinform all of you that if you post an Email to an address that has the school's "addy" after the @ sign, it goes to their email server. ALL businesses, clubs, organizations, Government Offices,etc,... scan their email for content. Which means that it is directed BACK to the one "in charge?" I have heard that some BOE Email is being read by others,... this is, in this case, an offense.
IF, you wish to contact a BOE member WITHOUT being "Big Brothered", you can send an Email to them at this site if you know who they are. JUST REMEMBER, The Administrator of this site can also read it. ( I TRUST THAT PERSON !!)
BUT,... IF you wish to converse with one of the candidates, and stay unknown, ask them for another email addy to work with that is NOT associated with the school or this site.
Whatever you do though, ask the new BOE MEMBERS what you want to, and TELL them what YOU want done.

irishman...you've got some tongues wagging over your most recent posts. Although I appreciate techie's insight, I am not so sure irishman is only talking about the community member e-mails to the BOE members.

Techie -- Thank you for your kind words. You are right I truly care about this community and our children. I am troubled by your statement that some of the emails were being poptentially read by others...Can you elaborate on this situation? I have sent emails to many of the BOE members and would be interested in finding out who had access to them....If it were just the Network administrator I for one don't think that's a foul and know that the Network owner has a right to access that information. If you are claiming that we were hacked into again.....That would be a serious concern of mine....Please advise if you have additional insight.

GOPYBL,
Don't be too concerned over what I had posted.
Just remember that what you post HAS the potential of being found by someone else.
I would still ask questions, and reply my thoughts without care of WHO will read them because I would also like to have others question my motives for asking. This is how we learn from each other. IMHO
Also, look back to when this site began, in July & August we found Emails from a few years before about the "Wizard" that runs our IT services.
I found "OLD" emails that were, and still are, out there on the "Net".
Just keep on asking questions, and if they are true questions, why would you care if someone else reads them?
When I ask a question via posting or Email I do it for 2 reasons. 1) To get the answer to my question. 2) To let others know that questions ARE being asked and that the information is there for others to see. This way, anyone that has information to the contrary can post and help to educate us all.
Thanks!

I'm going to draw this back to the original question.
If I were running for the board: 1. I would state in no uncertain terms my position on academics/extra curricular activities.
2. I would reach out to a few financial experts in the community to review the budget. Gather their "professional" opinion on all the line items.
3. I would hold 2-3 open forums where I would gather input from the community on topics that are critical to them.
4. develop a "PAIN POINT" list of issues
5. develop an action plan to address those points
As to why people would vote for me.. TEAMWORK and Empowerment, that would be my platform.
Teamwork - For the community to be successful, there needs to be common goals, and there needs to be sacrifice at every level. The bond that was started this year with the Administration, BOE and the Community needs to be strengthened every year. We cannot function as separate groups anymore, fighting ourselves is not an option anymore.
Empowerment - I would lobby for BOE meeting separate from the administration. BOE/Community meeting where people can voice their issues and concerns not based on the "AGENDA", but what is on their mind. I would want input from the community on subjects not only surrounding the finance of the budget, but what administrators we may want to keep/replace/need, what positions will/ will not be given tenure, contracts..etc. This will provide the community a voice on how THEIR money is spent. The community will feel empowered. Maybe what they want will not always be the final decision, but they will have a voice.
Just my thoughts ...!!!!

How dare you sir? Providing a set of guidelines for what a perfect Candidate of the Board of Education would do! How dare you?
Seriously, your post reminded me of what had to be done by me when I represented six of the local libraries while on the Nassau Library System Board of Trustees.
It was mandatory that I individually host a District wide meeting of the libraries at least once a year - addressing many of the issues you brought out. In addition, I attended as many of the local Library Board meetings as I possibly could (some would have the same conflicting meeting days of the month - and I would alternate between them) It certainly kept me busy!
It certainly is a good post on your part - especially the part of working as a team for the good of the community. There is nothing wrong with a group working hard together, they need not all be individuals, as long as they are working for the community - not for their own secular or personal interests.
And the best way to ensure that happens is to do as you stated - get with the community as much as possible and listen to what they have to say. Also, inform them of the practicality and bounds on what can be done with the resources and legal restrictions that apply. In other words, exchange the skills and knowledge you will have picked up as a Board member with the general public.
Most of all - don't stonewall or disrespect them - they are your "bosses"!
Ed.
