Last night's meeting was quite an interesting one. There were two HOT topics discussed and things started to get a bit heated.
1. The Chief of the NMFD along with approximately 25 fellow NMFD volunteers came to the meeting with full fire fighting clothing on. The chief read a very long speech. The floor was open only for questions related to the agenda at the time. Rich Mallow said it wasn't part of the agenda and tried to squash the speech. However, Ralph Raymond mentioned (while also trying to abstain from opinion) that technically it was on the agenda because Rich Mallow started the meeting with comments about the Fire Fighters exemption. The chief went on to communicate his great disappointment with the BOE and their decision about not passing the exemption. Rich Mallow offered his apologies for the way it was handled and accepted blame for the way the motion was brought about and the miscommunication with the other BOE members.
The chief reminded the BOE that there are 120 volunteers and that they have a great voting influence.
2. The Eastplain addition was the second hot topic. Community members expressed their displeasure with the thought of expanding Eastplain when Packard is sitting vacant. Mr. Richman explained that in the LONG TERM, Packard would cost too much to maintain. However, he never explained what was meant by "long term". Community members persisted with their questions about this topic and it clearly caused great "stress" to Mr. Richman. He promised that at the March 8th Coffee Hour he would have more information about the sale/trade of Packard and Pickens (sp) and it would be placed on a vote for the community in August.
It was fun-filled and exciting meeting. I'm glad I was there.
