To start with I should not be the one to bring this up.
I am comfortable in my house, enjoying my family and pets, and my life goes on without troubles.
But one of my kids, and the friends in the neighborhood, were going through the recycle cans at 8:30 the other night. I asked them what they were doing. The response from these 5-12 year olds FLOORED ME!!
The response from these kids was "we are doing what we can". I KNOW that the day before these same kids were selling iced tea to try to raise money to build their own "half pipe" for their skateboarding. They wanted to help the people that "got rained on" They stopped their project to help people that they didn't even know, something that we should all learn from.
We have contributed to our kid's sports and the people who have done this should have statues erected in honor of the hard work that they have done, But if the district raised almost so far, 1/2 a million $ for our kids sports, what can we do for these people down south? It's only a twist of the tidal currents that keep us from becoming them.

Ah! 'Tis a wonderful question lad. To think that the kids would lead the way by putting aside their own self-interests to do something for those unfortunates who are suffering under terrible conditions through no fault of their own.
We have all seen the sorrows.
What say, my fellow folk? Would it be making any sense to take just 10% of our recent School and Library tax increases (just the increases mind you) and donate them to those hapless ones?
We could be asking that the Town of Oyster Bay levy an additional 10% on the property tax increases. For Plainedge this increase was a wee bit more than $2 million - that means we'd be asking Jim Stefanich (Receiver of Taxes) to take about $200,000 more in property tax from us. I've twiddled the numbers and it comes to about $33 more per house per year.
What say?, Can we, would we, get behind asking the Town to pass an emergency bill to do a little more work and collect money from us for those fellow human beings? Do it for all of Oyster Bay.
Is there a politician in this neighborhood we could use to hit the right button to start all of this?
Could you be imaging now, how much that would build up to if all of Nassau did the same?, And if Suffolk rose to the challenge too? And it could start in Plainedge!
Glory be! I hope it happens. God, please give it a kick in the arse to get the movement on its way!
