On November 14th, the first Community Coffee Hour of the year was held at Schwarting Elementary. Over 100 parents and residents turned out to engage in a conversation regarding last year’s budget process and the subsequent results. I extend a sincere note of gratitude to those people who were there. Everyone is busy these days and any night out is a loss of family time; so “thank you” for attending. Aside from the dialgoue around the budget, there were also questions and comments made regarding the Plainedge Public Library. In fact, it was raised that there is a petition circulating in the community to close the library. As the Superintendent of Schools, I would be remiss if I did not state my concerns to such an action.
A community should be proud of its public library. In Plainedge, the library serves our youngest to our oldest members. So if residents are unhappy with its operations or services, then the appropriate action is to get involved - attend board meetings, ask questions, and engage members of the board. And if those actions do not bring forth the desired changes, then run for a seat on the board. But to close a resource such as the Plainedge Public Library is not in the best educational interests of this community.
