This is for the future - for those who might like to start on the way there now.
I have mentioned on other threads that we should work to make the children's education a step up from what it is now.
I'd like to clarify that - despite the diversions and distractions caused by the Superintendent, there those on the staff who have made excellent contributions to the education of our children. We all know of the many programs started by them, and we have seen how readily Richman has taken credit for them.
We have a task in front of us to assist those staff members in raising the teaching levels once Richman is no longer around to impede them. We must not quit after the present immediate goals are met.[/i]
Towards that end - we could make it easier for the staff to take advantage of modern methods and tools that improve education. One way is for them to aid education by replacing the old paper method of carrying information around - carry it on plastic instead.
Just look at the back packs that strain our children's daily walk to and from school. Books of the 1900's are used instead of CDs and DVDs of the 2000 era. Imagine if all school books were put onto CDs! (License fees could keep up the income of the book publishers - just the format would be plastic not paper, and much easier to carry!)
Children could even have a DVD at home and one at school, retaining the home DVD for reference use next year! Presently, one doesn't even need their own PC - DVD players are abundant and priced lower than many games and Ipods!
Here's some information about what's being done now in another country to put "book learning" in a modern format. Why don't you take some time to look at the site to get familiar with what could be done to make it easier for our children to get to all the new information they will have to absorb.
It takes a newly educated parent to know how good the new education of their child could be![/i]

The Freeduc CD-ROM for Education.
What is it?
People have built a live Freeduc system on CD-ROM which doesn't need any installation to be used. Just put the CD into your PC and restart the computer. It has a full self-booting operating system on the CD and does not write to, or change, your hard drive information.
From the user's point of view, it is independent of what operating system you have on your PC and the learning applications are readily available from various drawers on the Desktop. Many primary school topics are covered, each in their own Drawer of information; Science, Geography, Mathematics, etc.
The idea of the live Freeduc system on CD-ROM is to let the end user, mainly a teacher, to easily access all the free education applications without harming the regular PC system.
From a technical point of view, it is based on KNOPPIX/Debian versions of Linux. This gives the possibility to easily add and to the package any additional software on each CD release without being limited by licensing and copyright restrictions.
The list of installed packages is in the latest version of Freeduc-cd, Version 1.5. It is a special version for primary school applications. It has been produced in collaboration with the CRDP d'Aquitaine/CDDP des Landes and the teacher volunteer group of AbulEdu. It is based on practical experiences of working teachers.
How can you get the Freeduc-cd? You have two options to get the Freeduc-cd. You can download it, or you can get it in the form of a cute package with written instructions (only French for now but the CD is international) by becoming an OFSET member.
The Download site is at:
www.ofset.org/freeduc-cd
It will take about an hour to download on a high speed connection as it contains a full CD image file of applications and an operating system. It is in French. You will need to burn the iso image onto a CD to use the product.
