hi all-
Just wondering- since when are parents allowed to assist coaches for school teams? I noticed this happened this spring with the 7th Grade girls softball team. A parent was allowed to direct the kids, while the coach was there watching and directing as well. This parent was not, to my knowledge even a PGSA coach? Just wondering - Is this allowed? Has anyone seen this on any other teams or the boys teams? If so, I can see many parents jumping in on this one.

???I noticed the same thing. There is a father that basically coached the 7th softball team. From what i noticed the coach was very happy to have someone else do his job. I am concerned about insurance and code of conduct being followed. What is going on in this district with the AD. I know the new varsity coach who just brought the girls softball league to new heights with their fantastic year would never go for some self proclaimed coach to step on his toes.
Jamie LaBelle should be made aware of this. It is certainly putting the girls on the team in a very strange position. Who will the 8th grade team be next year?!?! I am sure he has picked out and will tell Liz Lewis what the draft will be. Let's see what she is made of and if she does her job. Two years ago she ran a joke of a try-out session for the 7th -8th grade team. Thank god someone handed her a yearbook with the girls pictures marked of who she should pick (oh yes, parental guidance seems to be abundant in MS softball for years)
We worked so hard to get this sport back and again a coach doesn't do his job and let's a parent do it - putting yet again a program in bad light. We need athletes that teach sports in MS softball - we certainly do not have that now.
If we have parents coaching why are we paying these coaches?!?!?!?
I know I plan on attending a lot more games next year just to see what we are doing with the money we are paying for these coaches!
SHAME ON JAMIE LABELLE FOR LETTING IT HAPPEN.
MR. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR - WHERE ARE YOU!??!

You assume that-
1. He knows where the PMS is located. 2. that he ever stays past 3:00pm to actually view a game or coach.

;DYou are so funny, 1plainedge!!!! I like that one..So, I am guessing that this is INDEED a problem? I just wanted to be sure because I have NEVER heard of any parent being allowed to basicially run a school run team. The Athletic Director Definetely needs to know this. Now I too am concerned. How can any "Coach" allow parents to do this? This to me is also a code of conduct and insurance issue. What if this said "parent" said something nasty to my child? Who is then responsible? YES- Where is our Athletic Director? ?

The only way the AD will know is if you write a letter to him and copy the superintendent and the BOE president.
There must be written complaints to have any action taken at all.
If you have any pictures send them along.
It is all hearsay until there is something concrete and in writing.
I am and I suggest you do the same.

I agree with all that has been said. I believe that last year there was much discussion about this AD- he really is never around! I would guarantee that he did not watch any games this year - he barely makes it to high my kids high school games. I've tried to contact him and he is never in his office. His secretary always takes my message but he never gets back to me. I heard that coaches are not evaluated formally and that he basically lets them do whatever they want as long as they don't get him involved. If you read posts from last year, he does not attend meetings and is often seen showing up late and leaving early. He needs to be held accountable.

Just for the record, I tried 3 times today to get in contact with the AD - morning, afternoon and late afternoon - he was not available all 3 times. Does anyone keep track of where he is? Now that sports are over - does he ever show up for work? I agree with last year's posts on him- this will be John R.'s present to the district. I heard that JR liked him because he tells good jokes at parties! I plan to ask some questions about him at the next board meeting. I'm sure he won't be there. I only hope he will not take it out on my kids. One plays a sport he tried to get rid of and the other one plays one of his "favorite" sports. My kids don't even know what he looks like. How can I get a job like that? At least he saves money, not using gas to show up for work. If the board does not give the ok for a parent to coach and someone gets hurt - what is the district's responsibility?

You can go for it at the BOE meeting and do not worry about your kids, he won't know who they are anyway.
You are right, regarding responsibility. What about if he says something off color, in jest or just unknowingly, what if one of the girls gets hurt under his direction, what if he decides who next years 8th grade draft will be. He already hand picked a team to play for the summer with .
I can imagine in his head the man has good intentions, but are his interests only for his own daughter and not the team or could he truly possibly see a failure in a coach that is supposed to be teaching and working with the kids and he thinks he is picking up the slack? It could be both but either way it is putting the district in a position that lead to problems.
I have written to the board and hopefully something will be done. The meetings are very hard for me to make, so any support you can give bagelmaker of bringing these issues to light at a BOE meeting will be in the interest of the entire district and I thank you.

I will bring it up at next BOE meeting. I do know that to be a NYS coach in a school - one must take all kinds of coaching courses and have first aid courses. I am sure this father has neither. I also feel that some "volunteers" help for their own reasons - aka his daughter. That is not true for all volunteers. Seems to be a conflict of interest here - especially if he is coaching the same girls on another team. Did he have BOE approval? If not, the coach and Mr. Labelle should be punished. Good luck with Labelle! He always seems to avoid getting in trouble.
