I am not happy about the cuts but is it necessary to make any statements about his disability? Is that what we want to teach kids - if we are upset with someone we attack them in a unfair way? I hope you are not a teacher!

I was wondering how this would affect us. It should make for an interesting budget vote, to say the least.
I can only hope that the BOE and administration make the smart choices given the current news and state of the economy.

bagel, my comment was more alagorical regarding his blindness. he cannot see that everyone is hurting and cannot afford more fees and taxes. us, the taxpayers are getting hammered on every front right now. Will increasing fees and taxes help or hurt the economy more? Now, do you see why I called him blind? I should have thrown in dumb as well. Lets hope the state senate and legislature do the right thing and modify this budget proposal to hurt us all less.

This one is going to be a big hit on all of us. I have always worried about putting in the star increases into the presentation when the budget is being presented to the community because that money is not guaranteed to be there for ever. so when a budget is proposed using the Star increase to figure in the amount of money an average household would go up dollar wise we have to remember that the star part could be taken away at any time. So now on past budgets where we thought our taxes would go up a certain amount that increase for past years is now larger because the amount of increase was based on partly by using the increased Star numbers. It's the same thought process that when you use a one time cash inflow like a sale of property or applying fund balance money one year to lower the tax impact it comes back to you the next year because that one time revenue stream is gone the next year. I have been to many budget meetings over the years and while there is always ways to cut I think our district is really cut to the bone without cutting any programs. I'm not looking forward to this budget year. We already started having the family talk of soon not being able to live in NY anymore.

P.S., you couldn't pay me to be a board member this year! I feel sorry for all of our board members and the job they have to do this year, good luck!

What exactly would you like the gov to do? Are you aware of the situation that has occurred nationwide. You can't give what you don't have. The comment about his blindness was still unnecessary. Of course, it must be tough for you to admit that and to come up with an alibi. As far as this year's budget, it's going to mean reduced programs or higher property taxes. I don't know how much more those who don't have children in the district will continue to support us. All you see on the TV are seniors who want to see cuts made to keep taxes at their present rate. I wouldn't expect the bargaining units to give anything back. How many more years is is the teacher's contract? How much more are we going to pay our administration? Should be an interesting year. I really don't feel that blaming the Governor for delivering the message that is quite obvious to all is the answer. Of course, our local politicians will try to lay it all on his back. Lots of grandstanding and finger pointing. It will take time for our nation and state to get back on its financial feet. Unfortunately, in the next couple of years we all will have to sacrifice. A line by line look at what is necessary will be the law of the land. Let's just try to keep the offending comments out of the debate. Have a good day!

baglemaker, Im taking the high road on that point. I guess you didn't like the Saturday Night Live Skit that was done about Paterson. I have to admit I laughed when I saw it then felt a little guilty. Then I thought about how much they were getting on Bush and Palin in the past. Palin took a beating way worse than Paterson over the last 6 months. I think we may be getting too politically correct in this country. It gets harder to determine when we are crossing the line.

What exactly would you like the gov to do? I would like the Governor to submit a budget that ALSO reduces (not increases) spending in addition to adding more taxes for non diet soda, Cable/satellite TV, entertainment tickets, luxury vehicles, beer, wine....not to mention eliminating that STAR school rebate, ending the cap on gas tax, etc. What next.....oxygen tax? This can't be a one sided budget. If one was considering moving out of NY State, this budget (if approved) will certainly push them out. As for the school budget....it's not just the seniors that want to keep things where they are (or darn close). We've been through the contingency budget thing. Though not pretty, the administration did NOT reduce any of their costs that year. Times have changed and so have the people that are running the school. Don't single out the teachers and their contract. I still maintain the belief that the main office runs "too fat". Hopefully, they have learned from past history when drafting next years budget.
