For the record, I am not a volunteer firefighter. My view on this matter is that the exemption is a no brainer. $3.80 ? That is the tax burden annually that each family in Plainedge has to buck up so that we can extend good will to our fellow community members that so graciously dedicate, and can at any time, give heroically of their own time. Time away from their own family and loved ones. Hours spent in a way that contribute to our communities’ sense of well being. I ask of the B.O.E members that they strongly consider extending the courtesy of the exemption to our volunteer firefighters. They are our fellow Plainedge residents, our neighbors and they do a job that has to be done and they do it voluntarily. I’ll say that again, they do a job that has to be done and they do it voluntarily.Less than four bucks a year? ? I’ll give up my extra-large 7-11 Dark Mountain Roast coffee and Daily News one day a year for them. Gladly. Not to mention the extraordinarily important message it will send to a presently tranquil, but eager to hear, community that this is a new B.O.E from past years.

WILDROVER,
I and my family agree with you 100%. When I lived in Farmingdale, the Fire Dept. was ALWAYS doing service. When I moved back to Massapequa, I found the same , if not more, dedication from the Dept.s. Unfortunately, I have had to call on the services of these fine and brave volunteers a few times in the last few months. These guys need AND deserve all we can give.
Without these firefighters, I would have had a lot less time with my father. For that alone, I will give WHATEVER they ask.

I agree. I have had personal experience with the volunteer firefighters. They do an outstanding job.
What I don't understand is why this issue lingers?

What I don't understand is why this issue lingers? Maybe Rich Mallow can answer that question? ;D In addition to the Rich Mallow debacle, last year, the district was not able to obtain and give out ACCURATE information. Therefore, the BOE voted it down.

What I don't understand is why this issue lingers? Patty Boy, In all fairness, I believe the BOE is addressing the issue this year long before they did last year. I also believe that it was brought up to the BOE members at last months meeting so that they can reach out to the community, their "Peeps" I believe was the quote, and get a read on what the "Peeps" desire is. It would be a continuing step in the right direction, IMO, if they approve the exemption and heal an oh so unnecessary rift left over from last year. I have to believe we have some bridge builders sitting at that table.

Wild boy, my exact point...
'In all fairness, I believe the BOE is addressing the issue this year long before they did last year" It's a 2 minute conversation and a 30 second vote.

It's a 2 minute conversation and a 30 second vote. A no brainer indeed. The vote I mean. Not you my friend.

After a very brief discussion, the Board agreed to pass the Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers Exemption at the Thursday Business Meeting. The tax impact is approximately $3.80 per household.
