Sorry, but the wonderful Doc's word is meaningless to me. It's what is in writing that we must go by. This is what was distributed at the final BOE meeting before the vote. This was also available on the school website as the final budget pamphlet. I have to give this one to "Facts". They had planned on the rebate before it was even approved. The hand was in my pocket before I even was able to get the money. Reality Check! Some residents have their 2006-2007 Tax Bill in hand. For some the Bill is in the hand of their mortgage holder - with new Escrow and monthly payment book to follow. Let's see how one such bill compares to what the District told us it would be in the Budget flyers sent to everyone! (See above Quote) From Go Plainedge's post we see it was told to us that $320 would be the increase. From my Tax Bills of $5773.45 for the School Tax in 2004-2005 and my new $6508.11 Tax Bill, I find my Bill has increased $734.66! That's $415 more than what we all we told the "average" would be! Am I that much more than average? Or was the estimate in the Budget that far off? What does your increase turn out to be in actual fact? How will you react to the next estimate? Ed.

Well Ed, you're not alone. my school tax bill went up a whopping $1400.00 a year from last tax bill. I had my bill grieved prior to this so I got some money off last year. I guess the whole thing kicked in this year. Imagine, over $1,000.00 in one year and that does not include the general tax. My husband and I are on a fixed income due to permanent disability on the job. We are not old enough to collect senior enhanced star or any allowances, not that I believe it helps the seniors that much in the face of rising taxes. He has at least 6 years before he gets there. What will our taxes look like by then? It's outrageous! I predict more houses going for sale in this community than ever and not because of an austerity budget but because people can't leave here with the unreasonable school taxes. Everyone was worried that the houses going up for sale was because they wanted to leave the district since we didn't pass the budget, well, looks to me like there are many more leaving for the opposite reason. How can we live like this? I don't want to move south and leave my kids. Why should I? I've lived in this community for 32 years. I never saw it this bad, but at the rate the taxes are going up, I may be forced to. We are a community of two salaried couples. People, do you want to have to hold down three or four jobs? WHEN WILL YOU SEE YOUR KIDS? They need YOU more than programs! What are we going to do about administration raises, perks and everything else that drives up our taxes without our consent. It's time to rally together and start doing something in this community for ALL of us. WE NEED TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM!

Another reason why I NEVER believe what the administration and BOE tell us. It's NEVER accurate.
The same will hold true for the Eastplain expansion. You'll see a tax levy from that too.

Yep. there are lots of houses for sale around these parts, that's for sure. The taxes are the reason why. FYI, the spat of homes for sale had nothing to do with austerity. It had everything to do with taxes going up 1K per year for the past 6 years. Now our homes are worth 100 Grand less then they were just 2 years ago. What say all the it's because we're on austerity contingent? All of us should have stupid tatooed on our foreheads for letting the admin theaten to cut programs instead of curtailing their raises.

Well, what do you know, it is now official - Nassau has the second highest property taxes in the nation, right behind Westchester!!!
This is from News12 website:
Nassau barely misses dubious property tax distinction 10/04/06) NORTH MASSAPEQUA – The U.S. Census Bureau confirmed Wednesday something most Long Island residents knew all to well – Nassau and Suffolk property taxes are among the highest in the country.
Nassau County barely missed out on the dubious honor of ranking first. Nassau’s average annual property tax bill is $7,025, second only to Westchester’s $7,337 per year. Suffolk, also in the top ten of U.S. counties on the list, averages $6,131 per household each year. Out of the highest-paying 35 counties examined in the new study, more than half were in New York.
The report also reveals Nassau residents spend approximately 8 percent of their total income on property taxes alone.
____________________________________________
I have a question on the tax bills we are getting: When are the rebates the state will be giving us coming? I thought that the state budget included rebates directly to homeowners and that the average was between 300-400 for Nassau County.
How and when do we get that money returned to us?
Does anyone know?
Thanks - Anne

Workingmom and all.
First to answer workingmom's question about the Star Rebate checks that will go directly to the public; They are a new way to engender the Public to the present politicos during the November vote. The new wheels and systems that are turning in Albany to crank out the several million checks needs a lot of "First Run" shakedowns.
The main thing to notice is that it has been just recently (Albany Time) that authorization was given to cut the checks - the Second thing is that the "deadline" is they must all be mailed by the week before the election! So folks, that payday is still "coming soon"
As I previously posted - don't spend the money before it is in your hand as the District was counting on you to do in their budget estimate flyer!
They ignored the fact that there might be a delay in the refunds and sent their demand for Tax Refund money as part of the Tax Bill they just sent to you!
"Pay up on the Schools cost , even if you don't have the rebate money in hand" is what they just told us!!!
What else did they just tell us?
Well for one thing, since whatever the total tax Bill on my property is in dollars, the percentage increase should be the same as anyone else in the District (unless there was a recent "tax Adjustment" on one of us)
That means although my increase was $734.66 in dollars, yours might not be the same. But if my actual increase in percentage was 12.72%, yours is that percentage too!
The Budget information they put in front of the public to vote upon claimed that the increase from Property taxes would be 8.8%!
Why don't you dig out the new Tax Bill of your's and compare the numbers I've given to you to the ones you get from checking your Prior year's Tax Bill.
OH! and Yes! Why not have many others do the same thing and bring the results to the next BOE meeting?
Then ask them why the actual numbers don't compare to what they tell us in meetings, on the School site, and in Budgets and flyers mailed to the Voters!!! Their story line of an answer should be interesting!
That was the issue at the heart of the petition that Joe Chalupka sent to the Commissioner of Education. His request was to get the District to give out consistent numbers. The Commissioner sat on it for so long that he called getting the answer for Joe a "Moot point", thus protecting the District. Joe called these ever shifting numbers a "Shell Game". Anyone out there want to follow up on Joe's initiative? I'll help anyone with the filing of a Section 310 Appeal - as I did with Joe.[/i]

Hey, Mr. Ed.
Bogus info. your tax bill is not 6508.11...more in the neighborhood of, oh, i'd guess 3989. Keep it real now.
Remember...pray for the victims.
Peace out.

Welcome back Jdavola!
It's a pleasure to see you once again put your foot in your mouth!
Especially when you deal directly in the intricacies and the figures of a Tax Bill for 448 N Syracuse Avenue, a School District Property Tax Bill I hold in my hand and you've never touched!
It once again is obvious that you choose not to see, read or comprehend the full information on such a Tax Bill and will tend to "minimize", by one means or another, the total Tax money the homes therein are required to produce from all Tax derived money paid to the School District.
The amount of that tax money raised via the Property Tax LEVY, is set by one entity and one entity only - the School District! Variations in the amount for each home and Class of property are set in law.
Individual School Tax discounts, with discount amounts replaced by other sources of State taxes, are set in law. The amounts to be replaced, just for the School Tax portion of the School District taxes and delivered to the School District are determined from each specific property's value.[/i] All this money is Tax Derived income. All tax derived money comes from taxpayers' pockets.
Tax Derived Income! That is one of the most distorted usages of Tax information released to the community from last year's Budget newsletter. Telling us that the estimated tax increase just for the SCHOOL portion of the total TAX Bill will be $320 for the year. Telling us that houses are assessed @ $422,000! (That's the home's MARKET VALUE, jdavola - not its ASSESSED VALUE!)
And to top it off, using words to say that if we take an added $330 and/or $228 from our pockets and give it to the School, our Property Tax Bill from the County (for School tax portion only), will be lowered by those amounts!
That's akin to a Bank Robber saying "give me half your cash now - that way, when I do rob you, I'll only rob you of half your cash!"
The twist on information you are trying to indirectly introduce - using an incorrect guess at a discount number for SCHOOL Taxes and replacing it with a value that is both SCHOOL Tax and LIBRARY Tax - ignores the fact that my property will produce $6508.11 in income from taxes for the SCHOOL this coming year. If 448 N Syracuse Avenue were not there, $6508.11 would not go to the SCHOOL for that property And, an undiscounted $300.73 would not go to the LIBRARY.
And, being so quick to access tax records (albeit incorrectly while using a mixed number set) directly for 448 N Syracuse Avenue (and, I wonder, how many other homes), I have assumed (maybe incorrectly) a strong connection between yourself and members of the Administration. Members that also re-interpret financial information for others in the District.
This happens even today with varying and inconsistent results - as if the information given is for the purpose of confusing, not informing!
Of course, you could clarify that assumption about your association with District Administration personnel for all, by completely identifying yourself as so many others have done on this site. Will you?
And, as a point of information, since you've last been posting this site has grown in the quality and quantity of its participants. Please use more than a spell checker when posting - Our standards have risen. Isn't it about time your's did?
Ed.
P.S. Since when has providing full and correct information to the community a "negativity" action? And - just who is it "negative" to?

workingmom!
WELL! They finally did it! I have my Tax Rebate Check in hand.
It comes to $489.12 and came off the presses on Oct. 2!
And, "So sorry please" Dr. Richman, it just fills in the missing amount I budgeted to have an overgrown tree removed in my back yard!
Nothing is left over to reduce the impact of higher property tax you levied on all of us! I can't spend the same money twice on two different things - as you think we are able to do!

patriot2415 & all,
Yes, I do have "friends in High Places - - - You!
And you just clarified something for us all by posting how much your check was for.
The difference between our checks is $195.26 - exactly the amount of difference between the STAR payment and the Enhanced STAR payment - - - although Albany and the Press releases never gave that detail!
You got the STAR amount, I got the STAR plus the Enhanced STAR.
The Enhanced is an extension of the STAR that you qualify for as you get older and have low income.
Thanks for the info that'll be a help to all!
Ed.
P.S. Please excuse my misunderstanding of the humor behind one of your last posts. I have been a little too thick and surly lately because of my medical problems!
