78...any ideas what the letter says? Even if he did only those residents within the Plainedge School district can vote on the proposal...and in my opionion only Plainedge residents should be allowed in and to speak at the Dec 3rd meeting--whether that will happen is a different story

I heard rumblings the other night at Back to School night in the MS that the Farmingdale residents that live across the street from Packard are still very unhappy and are organizing. They did contact a politician ( not sure who but maybe it was Mejias ) who told them to attend the 12/3 meeting. Be prepared to see them there. As long as we rally strong at both sessions, they will be drowned out. I feel for there concerns but they purchased there house next to a MS. I still believe that an active MS would cause more traffic then a Town facility so I feel they should not be so concerned. From a property standpoint they are losing an eyesore and getting a beautiful new park. Lastly, school district borders have to have a boundary and they happen to live at the end of theres. We do not get to vote on Farmingdale matters.
To all Plainedge residents, please stop down on 12/3 to either session but especially the early one as it will probably be a little less crowded. Show your support for this project. The kids of Plainedge deserve this state of the art facility and the rest of us need a center piece for our community. THE PLAINEDGE COMMUNITY PARK, it has a nice ring to it.
Happy Holidays to all, see you on Monday

I can understand their concerns. However, once on the ballot, they will have no say.

This just underscores the importance of MONDAY -
This is/could be a political mess for politicians who dont like hot button issues. They have to deal with a school, 2 communities, a vote etc.... dont make it easy for them to go spend the money elsewhere
We REALLY REALLY need Monday to run 99% positive 1% negative.
KEEP PUSHING!!!

My scanner is on the fritz so I'll retype the letter here...
November 28, 2007
Dear Neighbor,
As your Nassau County Legislator you have elected me to represent you in local government, to keep you informed on important local issues and to coordinate with other elected officials and government agencies. I am writing today to inform you of an IMPORTANT PUBLIC MEETING regarding the future use of the Packard Middle School property and how this will affect local residents.
He gives that dates and times of the meetings
I urge you to please attend this important meeting and allow your voice to be heard. The future use of this property will have a significant impact on the tax roles and school taxes collected by the Plainedge School District as well as local traffic and zoning. I encourage you to please let your friends and neighbors know about this meeting as well.
Please feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or concerns. I thank you in advance for your dedication to the local community and your participation in important local issues.
On a side note..why hasn't the town reached out to us Packard neighbors that are in the district? Nobody living around the school is supporting this project except for me and I could use some help.

Typical Meijas... never was a friend to PE. He welched on promises he made to help fix our fields, he was non existent with cash when we were battling to raise money to keep our sports alive (but was always there for the photo ops), he knows we pushed hard when Sabelico ran against him. Now he doesn't even put any signs up in PE when he runs for re-election. He carries the day with F'dale and Old Bethpage.
When he was pushing hard to develop the Liberty site adjacent to Allen Park did he ask us how we felt?
This is our issue, our school district, our park. Make sure everyone keeps screaming that the new building is only 4% of the property, hopefully that quiets everyone down.

And for the parking-
Full Field Soccer / Lacrosse average 16 players per team x two teams = 32 cars.
Baseball average 16 players per team x four teams = 64 cars
96 cars at one time with parking spots on site for 173 vehicles. That still leaves 77 spots for overflow and teams arriving early for the next game.
A TINY building, with AMPLE parking. Keep pushing the facts!!!

I was truly hoping he was voted out.

No news on Meijas' website about OUR meeting but I did find this from November 2007. A $50,000 donation and then a $125,000 playground = $175,000 for FARMINGDALE...
Mejias Delivers Open Space to Farmingdale Vacant lot to be replaced by passive park for community Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias (D-North Massapequa) recently arranged for the transfer of County-owned land to the Village of Farmingdale for a passive park, transforming an unused parcel of land into a pristine neighborhood park. Leg. Mejias secured a $50,000 grant to pay for the construction on the .38-acre site.
“Instead of a dilapidated vacant lot, the people of Farmingdale will now have a beautiful passive park to enjoy,” Mejias said. “This new park is indicative of my commitment to the preservation of open space in Nassau County and the quality of life of my neighbors in Farmingdale.”
The park, located at the corner of Bethpage Road and Main Street in Farmingdale, will feature all new landscaping, a walkway with benches, and a small waterfall. It replaces a vacant lot filled with overgrown weeds and trees. Construction has already started on the project.
The park is across the street from Northside Elementary School, the site of a new playground that was recently installed and paid for with a $125,000 grant secured by Leg. Mejias.
“Getting the land was great, but getting the land and a grant from Legislator Mejias to put a park there was a double win,” said Village Trustee George Starkie. “This is a great opportunity for Farmingdale, and it brings more green space to our area.”

I keep reading that Plainedge residents have no say in Farmingdale votes; that I bought a house near a middle school, etc. First of all, Packard was build in 1974 and I have lived here since 1966. Secondly, Farmingdale does not have any schools directly on the border of another district. Plainedge has at least two - East Plains and Packard. Is this a deliberate ploy to minimze inconvenience to district residents?

the building is tiny, only 4% of the property, the traffic will be less then if we still operated a middle school there and there will be ample parking to get the cars off the streets.

The sarcasm and the total lack of respect to others is exactly what is not needed on here. Do you really think that the neighboring towns will not use that to our disadvantage? Use your brains. Writing about officials in a negative tone on here certainly will not help the cause either. Do you think that only Plainedge residents read this? I am sure public officials read this site all the time or have others that report what is said to them. Think what you want but watch what you write. I am sure my own "enemies" will chastise me for writing this. The ever zealous ego maniacs that continually look for causes to make themselves "special" will now attack me. We have the vote but now do we really need neighboring towns attacking us. What stops that neighbor from printing out your response and showing it to other farmingdale town residents? Duh! Think before writing.

I attended the 3:30 meeting today. The information on what it would take to repair packard was clear. That building can't be taken down fast enough!!!. There was a good showing for that time of the day with the good guys (yes) outnumbering the bad guys (no)... ONLY KIDDING !!!!.. Everyone who had something to say did, but I think the town understands that this community wants the trade. The drawings are beautiful, and if I lived there I would want the swap so the site gets improved.
I found the statements from the BOE members interesting, but at this point they are all allowed their own opinion in public.
I have a good feeling that in 2010 Plainedge will have an outstanding park.

Former, please understand that the sarcasm is really frustration...its frustrating to hear the ignorance that surrounds us and that it consumes so much of our time and energy. I was at the 7:30 meeting with my kids and some of the questions I really just couldn't comprehend...questions regarding air quality when the building is demolished??? I don't think this is the first building to be taken down that has asbestos within it, I'm sure they've dealt with this before.... what i don't understand is why does everything in Plainedge have to be a fight? we had to fight to get our budgets passed, we had to fight to get our programs reinstated and now we have to fight again to get a wonderful park built FOR us by the town? I just don't get it....I really thought this one was going to be an easy win for the community... and as far as the politicians reading this site...i really could care less...they are elected officials and need to know what their constituents feel about them... so 1plainedge...keep posting your honest opinions...i know myself and many others appreciate them. the rest of us need to continue to have our opinions heard...most importantly on election day in February...we need to vote yes for our kids and yes for Plainedge Community Park!!!

I thought the meeting was very informative and it appears that some issues were resolved from earlier discussions a few months ago. The most disheartening part of the meeting was hearing grown adults yell insults at members of the community who showed up and asked questions. I asked questions; was I a "Moron"? There's a saying that "no question is a stupid question. The only stupid question is the one not asked".
I just ask for some tolerance from people. Afterall, isn't it better that people took an active role and stated their opinions, asked their questions, etc. rather than showing the apathy that the district has been known for.
We aren't modeling particularly good behaviors for our kids when there are near fights breaking out in the hallway and name calling in the auditorium.
Overall, people worked hard to present their case and the town and the board listened to the issues. Whatever people's opinions, it should not be taken so personally.
We all want what is best for the kids. I'm for the swap, but I have to say there were some good questions raised and instead of getting angry at those who are considered the "nay-sayers", I just felt thankful that they were raising some important issues.
There have been many years no one asked the questions and look at the budget problems and policies that developed in our district as a result.
Let's present a united front and stop all the in-fighting. Work together to get people to come out and vote on Feb. 6, whatever that vote might be.
