Wild --- I agree 100%....Did you see the signs this Morning? I guess the Sign Fairies were up early today. I believe we have 5 people running right now. C_P_R and Maryann Capone and Alan Fox....I haven't heard of any others as of yet.

Five Candidates!
And last year we got one to run unopposed for a seat and two to run for the other seat!
Anyone have any info about the two newer candidates?
Felice Cantatore has presented himself at least a month ago to the Community and been vocal about his views - and Frank Presuto has actively been in front of the Community for about five or six months and made some very important points about his position at BOE meetings - and what can we say about Ralph Raymond except almost everyone has an idea where he stands on almost everything.
Alan Fox, if a candidate, has been slyly quiet about his position. I, for one, would like to "hear" from him on this Board - or on plaintalkonline.com. Does he have a position? Is it unique or is it a repetition of what others have pioneered and is now "popular" to ride the Bandwagon of?
MaryAnn Capone, what's your life story and position on the current issues? What would you bring to the BOE? Do you have any background in that type of activity? It does take a year of two to "jell" in BOE activities to the point where you can make decisions that balance community needs against the restrictions and practicalities of legal BOE activity. How do you plan to make that happen quicker? Do you have specialized skills? Such as in Financial Analysis?
These are questions for all candidates, not just the latest ones. It does take more than just donating your time and "Good"" intentions to become and effective Board Member. The most important activity of being a Board Member is the ability to use your brain - and to not blindly follow and accept the recommendations by the Professional staff. In fact, many times one must lead the Professional Staff, rather than follow it! It helps to also put your heart into those actions.
One must think and use all of one's knowledge and background to judge even the minor points about actions brought before the Board. Often, my most important input was to say "Why are we discussing this? It's not something that is any of our business to handle!"
And then there's the "after official hours" learning process. This is probably most important of all - to devote many hours to reading and improving your know-how on many diverse topics so you can make reasonable judgments at BOE meetings. And, believe me, despite all this, it is a very worthwhile activity to become involved with!
A start is to become familiar with the SED's Budget Handbook and the many other guidebooks put out by the State Education Department. They are quite good at bringing candidates and Board Members up to speed.
I just wish that the prior Board members, especially those that signed the now famous "Richman Contract", had but 1/10 the skill and experience that I now expect from the new Candidates!
Ed Dowdell.
P.S. I'm available for discussions about many practical Board Member situations and activities. edowdell@hoflink.com

Here is some food for thought......
IF Mallow is defeated, who will become BOE president? Does the BOE vote for a new President? Loretta has already stated (back in October) she didn't want the position.
Ed, what happens in a situation like this?

FYI...Rich Mallow cannot be defeated b/c he is not running. He announced at last night's board meeting that this term is his last. I'm not confident that I accurately know the logistics of how a new board president is chosen, therefore I will not speculate so as to not start any rumours.

School Board President procedure.
At the Annual reorganization meeting, usually held at the beginning of the new Fiscal year in July, nominations are made, seconded and discussed about the various Board officer positions and who might, or might not be, on that slate of officers. Following that, nominations are closed and motions made to appoint a person to each of the Board positions, one by one.
This provides an opportunity for each member to put their name in the hat for election to any position or to have an ally do so, or for a member to gracefully decline to run for any position.
As each position is brought up, a motion is made to appoint a specifically named person to that position, and a second of the motion is required. A discussion can be held followed by a move to vote. A vote is held and the majority decision becomes effective.
Most actions are not as formal and many corners are often cut in this procedure. Also many times a single motion is made to reappoint the prior officers of the Board in one fell swoop.
Last year, Mrs. G's refusal to serve as President, following the resignation of the President, was very unusual. As Vice-President, her responsibility was to become President in his absence. Her refusal to serve normally would also be considered a resignation from the Vice-President position on most Boards. It would have called for an election for both positions at that time.
I hope that information is helpful.
Ed

We now know there are 5 people running for 3 seats. My understanding is, there were several more petitions picked up. The deadline is not until next week. The more important question is, what seats are they running for?
great job with the signs!!! GET OUT THE VOTE

As I understand it, the “VOTE YES” campaign is now in full swing. Just some of the activities I have heard about so far:
A Phone chain committee has been formed and has been working overtime the past few nights. Contacting members of the community who didn’t vote in last years budget vote and reminding them that last year’s debacle can’t happen again.
A Flyer/Handout committee has the whole school district broken down into grids with active homeowners identified in each area that will help disseminate our “VOTE YES” materials.
A group (including some well intentioned posters) formed to identify and register unregistered members of the community so they can vote on May 16th. (The success of this was confirmed last night in a conversation with a district administrative employee). Keep up the excellent work.
The High School senior class has registered all 18-year-old students through the social studies department and the Honor Society is promoting the importance of these students voting. (Something should tell you that getting these kids who were most affected by this year’s budget fiasco to vote won’t be a problem)
A sign committee has just started placing signs in businesses and high profile locations around P-Town with plans to have hundreds of "VOTE YES" lawn signs available by April 25th for residents to display. (The posters on this site should get first dibs!!!)
I was told the plans for the Parade are coming along fantastically.
And Budget Awareness Day May 13th is forming up to be an exciting day. The word is the parade will culminate at JH West and there will be a free car wash, activities for the kids and KJOY radio is going to broadcast and promote the “VOTE YES” message from the location.
Yes, the “VOTE YES” train is starting to roll, picking up steam and passengers on its way to May 16th.
ALL ABOARD!!!!!!

WILD- PLEASE CLARIFY THE ABOVE PART REGARDING YOUR DISCUSSION WITH A DISTRICT EMPLOYEE ABOUT REGISTERING VOTERS. I WAS TOLD TODAY THAT IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO HAVE ADDITIONAL TIMES FOR REGISTRATION. IF YOU KNOW MORE PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG.

Getitpassed, The conversation with the district administrative employee consisted of the following inquiry: Q: Are there more people inquiring about registering and/or actually doing so than past years?
A: Unequivocally yes, they have received many more inquiries and registrations than in any past year. Good news I think for OUR cause.
That’s all the information that was gathered from that conversation as it answered the question. I hope that provided some clarification for you. It’s all I have.

It's been a bit of time now since the note about the two additional Candidates for the BOE - and the request for them to come forward to this Forum. Either they ignore it or they don't know of it. Certainly the Community feedback loop should have made the request known to them by now. I've gotten disturbing feedback myself about the Candidates. It seems that Mary Ann is a member of the PTA and Alan's wife is the "push" behind his candidacy, not his own initiative! His wife is also a PTA member. Lacking counter inputs from them, either due to their indifference, or lack of awareness of this Forum's activity, I'll take the feedback I've gotten as true. It's easy for them to prove otherwise. Sorry Charlie, but with two PTA members already on the Board, the addition of two more PTA affiliates just "loads" the viewpoint of the Board too much for me to vote for them! That's four out of seven having a very common interest!
Independent viewpoints are what we need after so many years of "clique" voting by the BOE.With no more information than that - I've made up my mind about voting for either of these Candidates - their lever stays up - no matter how good they may be otherwise. Cantatore ~ Presuto ~ Raymond! The cool team that's made the BOE work already! Ed.

I have to agree with "Just" on the voting.
Another PTA member would not be a wise choice (in my opinion). I believe she is also an Eastplain PTA member - that would not only make 3 PTA's but all from Eastplain (someone correct me if I'm wrong) That's too much of a "clique" for this community. I think we've experienced that long enough.
