I've heard that the Picken/Packard deal is dead. Has anyone else heard anything?

This is the last I heard.......
DRAFT
MINUTES OF MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION PUBLIC WORK SESSION June 12, 2007
At the Public Work Session of the Board of Education of the Plainedge Union Free School District, Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, N.Y. held at Plainedge High School, No. Massapequa, N.Y. on June 12, 2007, there were: Present: Mrs. Zinke Mrs. Flanagan Mrs. Capone Mr. Fox Mr. Pascarella Mr. Presuto
Absent: Mrs. Giardina Also Present: Dr Richman, Ms. P’Simer, Dr. Rufo and Mrs. Ripley and approximately 20 people.
Mrs. Zinke opened the meeting at 8:15 p.m. Call to Order
Dr. Richman updated the Board on the current status of the Packard/Picken transaction. Packard/Picken He stated that he has had numerous conversations with Andy Rothstein from the Town of Oyster Bay regarding this project. It appears that the Town will be sending letters out to the community inviting them to Town meetings on this issue tentatively scheduled for July and September.
Of course no letters have been sent and getting updates either through traditional means or through the school website has not been one of their strengths.

The people that told me the deal was dead have been right on the money with everything they've told me in the past. For our sakes, I hope they've got this one wrong.

dborg, are you saying the "HEADS" of the youth programs are representing the community? Who asked them to?
There should be OPEN meetings between the town, BOE and the COMMUNITY!!!!!

The presidents of the youth clubs are there because there clubs and our children are going to be using the new facilities. They need to provide input on the various needs of the clubs ( meaning field space ) and how to best serve our community. I know these individuals personally and trust me when I say they have your childrens needs first and foremost. There will be meetings with the community for you to provide input.
Thanks,
John Danielo

My point exactly. "They need to provide input on the various needs of the clubs". The park is not for the "CLUBS" but for the community. They can have input at community meetings

Needs:
The Clubs and the community are one in the same. Who makes up the clubs. Our children in the community. For instance, if a State of the Art facility is being built at the Packard site who do think is going to use it. Plainedge Soccer, Football, and Lacrosse. I am assuming that you have children that play in these clubs. They are going to play on the fields. I am not quite sure where you are coming from separating the two entities. These individuals that run these " community based organizations" donate a tremendous amount of time to help our children. They represent there entire organization and for the first time in many years are very united seeking the best for all and not just for some. I am very interested to hear back from you with regards to your concerns because to be honest I just don't understand where you are coming from. Have some trust, this is a new community, new BOE and new administration. Things are going in the right direction.

You say they represent the community. However they represent the league they operate. They haven't been VOTED into office to represent the ENTIRE community. Please lets not mix the two. I understand the time they put in, but this is a community issue and one that goes deeper then how the fields are laid out. The BOE who actually represent or at least have been voted into office to represent the community should be driving this. There has been no information provided for months.

Needs--I think your missing the point here...the leagues are made up of the COMMUNITY KIDS-thats the point Support, aka John Danielo, is making and i agree with him 100%. I also know that the TOB had a respresentative at the last BOE meeting but the minutes of that meeting have not been posted yet on the school's website so i don't have a summary to provide. What I do suggest is instead of venting on this chat board, that you email the BOE members and express your concern about the deal and how no information is being passed on to the community..their emails are on the school website... or perhaps attend a board meeting yourself, obtain the information and post here. Since the new field will be for the community, perhaps we should all UNITE and work together on this. It is a new year, a new administration, lets all be hopeful...

I'm not missing any point. If there are meetings to be held, then they should be BOE/TOWN/COMMUNITY ( of which the clubs are part of) meetings. I have been to BOE meetings, I have written the BOE. When I hear the club presidents speak they speak of all the children, on the side, baseball was worried about losing their fields at picken and not having 90ft bases at the new site. Soccer wants more room to expand their program. But as we all know there is a large population of NON RESIDENT children in that program. So lets not hide behind the "everyone is on board". There are many agendas and if the clubs want to have their say, then have it in front of the entire community.
I don't think I'm asking for anything more then having the meetings right from the start be open community meetings.
And before you go saying I don't have children, or I should attend BOE meetings. Let me say I have 3 children in multiple club programs and i attended 75% of the BOE meeting this year.

Needs:
Right now the project is in its infancy. I am sure there will be plenty of community meetings for you to attend to voice your concerns. I still do not really know what those concerns are. I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this matter in that I view the clubs as the community. If your three children are in the clubs than what is your concern. It sound to me like you have a personal vendetta against one or all of the club representatives. The clubs for the first time that I can remember are united in this project looking out for the best for all. If you would like to discuss this on a personal level and not on this chat board send me an email and I will give you my telephone #. My email is johnmdanielo@optonline.net.

So because I think there should be open community meetings that INCLUDE the clubs, and NOT club/town meetings I have a personal vendetta against someone? I know the clubs provide a great service to the community. I am not the calling for a community meeting where clubs are excluded or the presidents cannot voice their opinion, you and others however seem to be very sensitive about just the clubs meeting with the town and BOE. Now why is that?
This topic is a year old, not new. It was derailed until Richman left. Lets be clear about that.
I am in favor of the swap. However, you need the agreement of those who live in that area. Knowing that, the BOE better start moving on supplying information. because if this doesn't happen, it will be THEIR fault.
And no I have no vendetta against the BOE. Just want them to do their job!

Patient, you will get your meetings. They have to start somewhere. Reading between the lines if you live near Packard they are not going to put lights up.
