FYI...Based on the BOE Meeting Minutes from 8/30:
Ms. P’Simer asked the Board if there were any questions regarding the Packard Picken transaction. Ms. Zinke asked if residents surrounding the Packard building will be contracted and spoken to regarding the switch in properties. Ms. P’Simer explained that the district and town will begin meeting with identified groups, seniors, sports groups and Packard’s neighbors will be among the groups. Ms. Capone asked if a meeting with the PTA’s was planned. Ms. P’Simer noted that she and HJMT were working on a flyer for the September 24th meeting that would be mailed home to all residents in an effort to notify as many people as possible. A breakdown of actual costs incurred at Packard as well as any anticipated savings of personnel costs due to not using Packard, was requested. Dr. Rufo explained that some maintenance and ground personnel are housed at Packard but the ground and maintenance crews are already stretched. Ms. P’Simer told the Board that they will be asked to accept the Negative Declaration at the September meeting.

Picken /Packard
Just got my letter. How about the Town centralizing more of the services in the new building? If you need permits, or copies of Birth, Marriage, or Death Cert.s, Assessment info, or just about anything you have to go all the way to the Sound. Picken has used their space as can be expected. The offices have a lot more room than they need. Of course once you get used to the room it is never enough. Last week I was up at Town Hall North and employees I spoke with knew NOTHING about the proposal. I would hope that our Town Taxes would go to moving some of the offices from the North building down here to make it easier for ALL the Town residents. Right now the old small buildings just serve the 'Gold Coast" residents easily. The Town could use some of the real estate to fund a proper building at Packard, and give us our fields also. Locating Town Hall just south of Hempstead Tpke., and just off the SOB135 is a good deal for the whole Town. And yes for those of you that disagree, I live within a 1/4 mile of Packard. The traffic would be Monday to Friday, (9:00 am - 4:30 pm) (government employees try to leave early anyway) We in the neighborhood would be at work anyway, so it should not be a major problem. No more to the neighborhood than when the school was open with more students and teachers than could fill it now. IMHO (as always)

Um, no thanks to that. We have enough morons speeding down the street and ignoring stop signs. Keep all that shinola up in Oyster Bay. We, the neighbors of Packard don't need nor want that kind of traffic coming through. I would fight that one with every ounce of energy. As would my neighbors whom I've spoken with at length.

78PTOWNOWER,
I agree with you about the speeding drivers. I have kids and Grandkids and neighborhood kids I worry about too. I am looking into getting those white traffic strips put on our block to slow people down and I know it will take a petition from my neighbors. Too bad drivers are in such a hurry and gamble with our children's welfare.
From your post, are you opposed to the town hall south moving to Packard?
My suggestion is that IF the deal goes through and the Town does improve the fields for the kids, since the building site as it is and was, is larger than the other buildings, we can have more Town services closer to ALL taxpayers. Of course traffic and safety would be part of the Town's check.
My question again is, do you want the Packard site to continue to cost the District, or do you want to improve the Fields for the kids and take some of the Tax burden off the district? (non - confrontational) please give an alternative thought.

techie,
I am for the switch.
However, I would prefer they keep whatever services are offered @ TH north at TH north and not move those offices and workers to TH south.

1. Lots of people last night 2. Lots of questions 3. Lots of answers (though I believe more accurate and detailed ones needed and will come in the next few weeks) 4. Q&A dragged on a little too long. 5. Nice renderings from the architect 6. We need information on what we are getting from Pickens (photos, structural engineering reports, etc) 7. Who is paying for the TOB Field and Building construction?
Any other thoughts.

Hi Go, good meeting last night. I thought they did explain #7 pretty good. They said that the fields and building construction will be paid through the town board voting on a new 22 million dollar bond to pay for the work. That bond will be paid by everyone in the town that is taxed, commercail and residential. IT will roughly cost each home owner $12 a year in additional taxes on the town tax bill. There will be no increase in our school taxes for this agreement. I too would like to see a little bit more on what we are buying, they were quick to trash the Packard building but did not go into the same detail as to the condition of the Pitkin Building.

At the meeting it was stated that in the Packard/Picken trade the Picken school is the trade not the fields behind it. Which leads me to a few questions - How would they handle the parking and where does the liability lie as well as the maintenance for the parking lot? This could lead to problems down the road for the leasing to tenants and the traffic it would bring. Also, the town would need access to maintain the fields.
I am for the deal. I just want to be sure that we are all in the know of what we are getting EXACTLY!

Initially I am for the switch. However, after living through the previous school deals I want to see the appraisals on the properties. By previous deals I mean the initial sale of Picken to the town, the Baldwin ave deal to developers and the Southedge deal to developers. For those that don't know, Southedge was a Junior High school located just south of the high school. The property ran from Oak St to Queens Ave. Baldwin Drive School was on N. Idaho next to Packard.

we definitely should be getting more cash coming our way if this was truly just a swap of properties because of the lot size differential, however the cost of of state of the art park for our community use MUST be figured into the deal and can not be ignored. what makes this deal a bit different then the ones referenced above is that we are not building homes on this site which would yield a 1 time tax break and then put more students back into our existing schools which are bursting at the seams. The park lasts forever, we have picken to use a later date if needed and no new homes built which would put more kids back into our schools. After we built PMS we were never ever going back to Packard anyway. The footprint at East Plain is expanding and there is room to expand at both JHW and Schwarting if we need a few classrooms in the future. The chance of EVER opening up another school (picken) is probably slim and none however we NEED TO KEEP THE PROPERTY AS AN OPTION. And the problem is?
